The American Cancer Society hosts Great American Smokeout each year to encourage smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life – one that can lead to reducing cancer risk.
For this year’s Great American Smokeout, the Student Support and Advocacy Center will lead a cigarette butt clean-up from 12pm – 2pm on Thursday, November 16th, 2017. There will be on-campus and off-campus resources providing information and giveaways!
“Cigarette butts are not bio-degradable and can take on average 25 years to break down all the while leaching toxic chemicals like cadmium, arsenic, and pesticide residues into the soil and waterways.1”
SSAC invites individuals and teams to volunteer for the cigarette clean-up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0e48a8a72ca31-great4 Rain or shine the clean-up will proceed so wear gear and clothing most comfortable for you! Volunteers will be provided with supplies such as rain ponchos and gloves for the campus clean-up. By working with TerraCycle, SSAC aims to recycle all the cigarette waste!
Quitting is hard, but smokers can increase their chances of success with help. To learn about some on-campus and off-campus resources, visit The American Cancer Society, Student Health Services, Quit Now Virginia, Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, and Wellness By Mason.
