The following list of local resources is provided for the benefit of George Mason University students needing assistance.  These organizations are not owned or operated by the University.  Students are encouraged to used the services at their own discretion.

Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter

Located in Falls Church, VA, Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter is a 50-bed, emergency homeless shelter for adult men and women. The Center provides a Drop In program seven days a week offering homeless individuals the opportunity to bathe, receive a nutritious mean and wash their clothes.


Eleanor U. Kennedy Shelter

Eleanor U. Kennedy Shelter, operated by New Hope Housing, Inc., is a 50-bed walk-in shelter for adults without children.


Embry Rucker Community Shelter

The Embry Rucker Community Shelter is a 70-bed residential shelter that provides healthy, safe, emergency housing for families and single men and women.  In addition to their residential programs, they offer drop-in access to hot meals, laundry machines, and shower facilities for unsheltered homeless individuals.

Cornerstones, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that promotes self-sufficiency by providing support and advocacy for those in need of food, shelter, affordable housing, quality childcare, and other human services.  As part of its services, Cornerstones, Inc. assists individuals and families with finding affordable housing in the area.

Student Meal Assistance Fund

The Student Support and Advocacy Center has a limited number of meal vouchers for students, who are in an emergency situations and need food.  To learn more about this program, please call 703.993.5376.


Spend Yourself® Food Pantry

The Spend Yourself® Food Pantry provides food for hungry people in the community.  It’s open on Saturdays from 9:30 am till 12:00 pm.  Referrals and IDs are not required.

FACETS is a nonprofit organization helping individuals and families meet their emergency shelter, food, and medical need.  It assists them in gaining safe, sustainable, and permanent housing in an effort to end the cycle of poverty through educational, life skills, and career counseling programs.

Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) is a private, nonprofit community service organization dedicated to helping individuals and families find new paths to self-reliance.  This organization provides eviction prevention services, an emergency shelter in Manassas, as well as assistance with finding transitional and permanent housing.  In addition to housing services, NVFS also provides aid in the areas of workplace development, health and mental health services, and legal advice.
